Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Vanderbilt, Texas. If a hair drug or alcohol test is what you need, our expertise lies in hair testing, with testing facilities available nationwide. Generally, you need hair that is 1.5 to 2 inches long, either from your head or body. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specified testing needs.

In the past few years, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle testing. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals now favor hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are preferred by those enforcing zero-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals on probation due to their lengthy detection timeline of up to 90 days, their supervised collection procedure, and their resistance to evasion. However, urine tests remain the most accurate for detecting drug use within the preceding 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a repository for a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands during their growth. When sourced from near the scalp, hair offers a detection timeline of up to about 3 months for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to send.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil’s width) near the scalp, equates to 100mg—the ideal quantity for tests and confirmations. For EtG, add-ons, or comprehensive tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest weighing the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unobtainable, an equivalent volume of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it specifically pertains to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other types like facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory drug testing process comprises four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample into the lab’s system. This step includes confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, allotting a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry that isn’t automated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient method for excluding drug use in most cases, a positive result demands confirmation for legality in court. All samples suggesting positive results in Screening need further confirmation.

For samples with presumptive positives in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial batch for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug analysis the most challenging to execute.

Confirmation of positive Screening outcomes is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, presumptive positive samples undergo necessary washing. The complete laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair testing can reveal drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine testing which offers a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair test is quite difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Yields historical data: Provides insights into drug usage patterns over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • No detection of recent use: Drugs are detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is often pricier than alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth discrepancies might influence drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Although commonly dubbed "hair follicle tests," the examination actually targets the hair strand, not the follicle located beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair and urine drug tests in Vanderbilt, TX, the former emerges as the superior option due to its elevated detection accuracy. Unlike traditional tests, hair analysis screens for substances over a longer period, providing a more comprehensive assessment. This advanced accuracy makes hair tests preferred by employers who value reliable and trustworthy outcomes over the limited scope of urine tests.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Vanderbilt, TX, can benefit from the extended detection window of hair follicle testing, which captures a comprehensive history of substance use over 90 days. This approach helps discern habitual use from isolated incidents, offering a clearer understanding of an individual's drug use history. With this longer detection horizon, employers can make informed decisions rooted in accurate behavior insights.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Vanderbilt, TX, significantly reduces the likelihood of sample adulteration, providing reliable and unquestionable results. Unlike urine samples, which can be manipulated, hair tests are known for their robust tamper-resistance, ensuring the integrity of each sample. This intrinsic security feature makes hair testing a trustworthy choice for those demanding stringent authenticity.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
