Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Vincent, Texas. Should you require a hair-based drug or alcohol examination, our specialization in hair assessments allows us to serve you efficiently, with centers nationwide, including in each city. Hair lengths of about 1.5 to 2 inches on your head or body are generally needed. These tests screen for substances, alcohol/ETG, or other specific hair test options.

Hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become part of the regular methodology for substance screening. Organizations, judicial systems, and addiction specialists often opt for hair over urine tests nowadays. Notable advantages include a longer detection timeframe, up to 90 days, alongside a supervised collection process that makes tampering challenging. Urine tests maintain precision for very recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive history of drug and alcohol markers by embedding them within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When acquired near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to roughly 90 days for various substances. The collection process is straightforward, alterations are challenging, and it’s easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair portion containing approximately 200 strands (about the width of a #2 pencil) next to the scalp yields 100mg, which is considered optimal for testing and confirmation. For tests including EtG, add-ons, and those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is preferable. It’s advisable to measure using a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair cannot be procured, an equivalent quantity of body hair is acceptable. When we refer to head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other types, including facial and underarm hair.

Process Overview

The drug testing process in a laboratory includes these key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial intake of a sample into a lab’s system. This phase involves ensuring the sample’s proper sealing and transport, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data unless already included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary examination for substance misuse. Although it’s an economical approach for eliminating drug use in most cases, further verification is essential for legal admissibility in the event of a positive result. Samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening necessitate additional verification.

For samples showing presumptive positivity during Screening, extra hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. Drugs are isolated from the hair at concentrations significantly lower than in other testing methods (like urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug tests.

Any sample with a positive screen is confirmed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that show presumptive positivity are cleansed before confirmation if required. The full laboratory process from Accessioning through Confirmation undergoes review under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation alongside ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify substance use for up to three months, in contrast to urine tests which offer a briefer range.
  • Hard to falsify: Compromising a hair drug evaluation is challenging, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Details historical usage: It reveals drugs consumption patterns over time, not just immediate intake.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent intake: Drugs require about 5-7 days before becoming noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments typically incur higher costs than other testing types.
  • Result variation: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth differences may influence drug metabolite amounts in the hair.

Note: While frequently dubbed as "hair follicle tests", the examination actually assesses the hair strand and not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
