Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Vineyard, Texas. If a hair or alcohol analysis is required, we specialize in follicle testing and provide facilities in cities nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Generally, hair samples should be 1.5 to 2 inches long from either the head or body. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other specific tests.

In recent times, drug screening methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts often prefer these over standard urine analyses. Hair tests benefit organizations with strict anti-drug policies, are useful in court settings, or for those on probation due to their extended detection window, usually reaching up to 90 days. Despite this, for recent usage within five days, urine analyses remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has gained traction as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. This method offers a prolonged record of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When hair is collected close to the scalp, it offers a detection window of up to about 3 months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is not only easy to gather but also relatively hard to tamper with and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section composed of around 200 hair strands, akin to the size of a #2 pencil when measured close to the scalp, yields approximately 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG testing, additional testing, or when undergoing tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. It's recommended that the specimen be weighed using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. When discussing head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four key stages in the lab processing of a drug test: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves bringing a sample into a lab's system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for the presence of drugs. Although Screening is a cost-effective strategy to eliminate drug use in most samples, any positive screen needs confirmation to be court-admissible. Samples yielding presumptive positive results during Screening mandate secondary confirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction preparation. During this phase, chemicals are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than alternative methods (like urine or oral fluid), causing hair drug screening to be the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are washed before confirmation as necessary. The entire procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, making the results highly reliable.
  • Historical data provision: It can trace drug use patterns over time, rather than merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair about 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier than other methods.
  • Result variations: Hair color and individual growth differences can impact the concentration of drug indicators.

Note: Commonly dubbed as "hair follicle tests", the actual test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
