In Votaw, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing delivers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing solutions. Our facilities across the nation conduct hair drug or alcohol testing, requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body in most instances. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or custom options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method for determining drug use. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often choose this method over standard urine tests due to its extended detection period of up to 90 days. It's almost impossible to tamper with, offering a reliable alternative for those with zero-tolerance policies. However, a urine test is more effective for identifying drug use in the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The fibers of growing hair strands trap biomarkers, offering an extended record of substance use. When sampled close to the scalp, hair can reveal usage of alcohol and drugs for a period of up to roughly three months. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easily shipped.

A 1.5-inch hair sample containing around 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) gathered near the scalp provides an approximate weight of 100mg, ideal for screening and confirmation processes. For EtG analyses, additional testing, or examinations that exceed 10 panels, a specimen weight of 150mg is advisable. It's suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In instances where scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. The term head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other hair types (such as facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The drug test result laboratory process consists of four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory system. This step includes ensuring that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data entry that was not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary technique to detect drug usage. While Screening is an economical approach to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal validity. Any samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening need subsequent confirmation.

In cases where Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for further preparation in the Extraction process. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis a particularly challenging methodology.

Confirmation of positive Screening results is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing as required before confirmation. The entire laboratory procedure, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is conducted in compliance with the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analyses can identify substance use for as long as 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection period of urine tests.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insights: Provides a pattern of substance use over time, unlike tests that only reveal recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: Detecting drugs in hair typically requires 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses generally incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although sometimes labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Votaw, TX, hair follicle testing offers significant advantages over traditional urine tests. The capacity to detect drug use over a longer timeframe gives employers a thorough insight into an individual's substance history. Unlike urine tests, hair analysis is tough to manipulate, ensuring more accurate and reliable outcomes, crucial for maintaining safe and compliant work environments.

Extended Detection Window

The hair follicle testing available in Votaw, TX provides a longer detection window, identifying drug use up to 90 days. This allows employers to gain a comprehensive understanding of an individual's substance history, which is essential for keeping a safe workplace. Hair testing surpasses urine tests by offering a more extensive time range for monitoring drug use, which is critical for determining long-term drug use patterns.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Votaw, TX, hair follicle drug testing offers a tamper-resistant approach, minimizing the chances of sample adulteration. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
