Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Ware, Texas. Should you require a hair drug or alcohol screening, the company excels in such testing with centers available in all cities across the nation capable of conducting these evaluations. Generally, hair lengths of 1.5 to 2 inches, whether from the head or body, are necessary. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other needs.

Recently, the preference for drug testing has shifted toward hair follicle evaluations. Numerous employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse specialists now prefer hair tests over traditional urine exams. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals on probation benefit from hair tests. A primary advantage is the extended detection span, up to 90 days, in an observed process that's difficult to compromise. For detecting drug use in the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Regarded as an effective resource, hair testing is used for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can capture long-term substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of a growing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair samples offer a detection period of up to about 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample, roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the preferred amount for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional panels, or tests beyond a 10-panel scope, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be collected. By "head hair", we specifically mean scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the preliminary processing of a sample into the laboratory system. It includes checking that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. While it is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use for most samples, any positive screen requires confirmation to be legally admissible. All samples that test presumptively positive during Screening require secondary confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive during the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for further Extraction. This phase involves drug extraction from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the more complex methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples presumed positive are washed as necessary prior to confirmation. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is carried out under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests can detect substance use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection span.
  • Hard to falsify: Hair drug tests are very challenging to cheat, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers usage history: These tests can demonstrate drug use patterns over time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of recent use detection: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically more costly than other testing methods.
  • Result differentials: Factors like hair color and individual growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Though commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
