Offering thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Weir, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to for both hair and alcohol assessments. With centers across the nation, we specialize in hair testing and accept 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair for analysis. Our tests screen for a variety of substances, including drugs and alcohol/ETG, meeting diverse testing needs.

Hair follicle testing has grown popular for detecting drug use, favored by employers, courts, and substance abuse experts over traditional urine screenings. Especially for those with strict drug policies or under probation, it offers nearly cheat-proof results and a longer detection span of up to 90 days. However, urine tests still excel in identifying recent drug use within a five-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When collected from near the scalp, hair can offer a detection time frame of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair gathering is straightforward, relatively resistant to interference, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the circumference of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for both preliminary screening and verification. For EtG, supplementary, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. It's suggested to weigh the hair specimen utilizing a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair isn't obtainable, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process of determining drug test outcomes in a lab consists of four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing into the laboratory’s system. This includes validation of proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing additional data input not provided by an electronic chain of custody mechanism.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for drug presence. Although Screening efficiently determines drug use in most samples, positives require thorough confirmation for judicial acceptance. Any sample that tests presumptively positive in the Screening phase necessitates a confirmatory follow-up.

If a sample is presumptively identified as positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and made ready for Extraction. During Extraction, substances are pulled from hair at a lower concentration compared to methodologies such as urine or saliva analysis, underscoring why hair drug testing is notably challenging to execute.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is undertaken using methods such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumed positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab protocol from Accessioning through Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug evaluations can identify drug use over a span of up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection interval of urine tests.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug analysis is challenging, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Provides historical data: It tracks drug usage patterns over time, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair following a period of roughly 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Hair drug assessments typically come at a higher expense compared to other testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Elements like hair color and personal growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination assesses the hair strand itself, excluding the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Weir, TX, hair follicle testing proves its superiority over urine tests through its enhanced detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike traditional urine screenings, hair tests are less prone to manipulation and offer a more comprehensive detection of substances. This makes them a preferred choice for various stakeholders focused on accurate drug use screening.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Weir, TX benefit from the extended detection window of hair follicle testing, which can reveal substance use up to 90 days back. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
