Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in West Bexar, Texas. Whether you're in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol test, our expertise in this area is unmatched, with a nationwide network of testing facilities capable of conducting such tests. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is required, and both scalp and body hair are viable for testing substances including drugs and alcohol/ETG, among other specialized options.

Hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly common in recent times as a preferred method over standard urine tests. It's particularly favored by employers, courts, and substance abuse experts for its ability to provide extended detection of drug use, often encompassing up to a 90-day history. This method is ideal for organizations upholding drug-free policies due to the near-impossible likelihood of evading the test and its supervised collection process. Nevertheless, for identifying drug use within a shorter timeframe, such as the last five days, urine tests remain highly precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now viewed as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term evidence of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the expanding hair strand. When obtained from near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection window of up to around 3 months for alcohol and drug use. Hair is straightforward to collect, not easily tainted, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg, which is the optimal amount for testing and validation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. By "head hair," we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key laboratory procedures for processing a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the step of integrating a sample into a laboratory system. This step verifies whether the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigns a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary examination for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive result must be verified for court acceptance. Samples showing a presumptive positive in Screening need subsequent verification.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive result during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are removed from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening is among the most complex procedures.

Verification of any positive Screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated according to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug evaluations can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a narrowed detection span.
  • Difficult to manipulate: It is extremely hard to falsify a hair drug test, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a timeline of drug usage, not simply recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations are typically more costly than other drug screening techniques.
  • Result discrepancies: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Often labeled as "hair follicle tests," the analysis actually focuses on the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
