Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug tests in West University Place, Texas. Should you require testing for drugs or alcohol via hair, our specialty is hair testing, with centers across numerous cities nationwide equipped to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your crown or body is necessary. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored hair testing options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become more common in drug testing procedures. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts increasingly prefer hair tests over the traditional urine tests. These tests are adopted by workplaces with strict anti-drug policies, judicial systems, and for individuals on probation. A key advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window for drug use, reaching up to 90 days, collected under supervision and difficult to manipulate. However, urine tests remain the preferred method for detecting drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now acknowledged as an effective method for identifying substance and alcohol misuse. Hair captures a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drug exposure by embedding biomarkers within the strands' fibers during hair formation. When sourced near the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug traces for up to three months. Hair extraction is straightforward, reasonably tamper-resistant, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch length from around 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) taken from the scalp yields approximately 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For tests involving EtG, add-ons, or more than 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's beneficial to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. If there's a lack of scalp hair, an equivalent portion of body hair is acceptable. By 'head hair', we specifically mean 'scalp hair'. 'Body hair' encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab analysis of a drug test result consists of four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample undergoes initial handling in the lab's system. This step involves ensuring the sample's sealed state and proper shipment, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any supplemental data not available through an electronic chain of custody.

Screening executes a preliminary check for abusive substances. Although Screening is cost-efficient for negating drug usage in most samples, a positive outcome requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples identified as likely positive during Screening mandate additional confirmation.

Should a sample test positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are drawn out from hair at much lower levels compared to other methods (such as urine or oral samples), making hair drug testing the most challenging to conduct.

Positive screening findings undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples showing initial positivity are washed before confirmation as necessary. The full lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is audited according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can trace drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter timelines.
  • Hard to deceive: Hair drug tests are extremely hard to tamper with, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers usage history: It establishes a drug use timeline, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: Drugs show up in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair tests tend to be pricier than other methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the skin.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In West University Place, TX, hair follicle testing surpasses urine tests in effectiveness. While urine tests only cover recent usage, hair tests provide a broader overview, including a longer detection window.

Employers appreciate the superior detection capabilities of hair tests. They minimize cheating, offering credibility and assurance in maintaining a drug-free environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
