In Wheelock, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. Experts in hair and alcohol testing, we boast testing sites nationwide to cater to hair testing needs. A strand of hair measuring 1.5 to 2 inches, typically from the crown of the head—or another body area—suffices for testing. Drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other custom tests can be conducted using hair samples.

Lately, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for substance screenings. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists often prefer hair tests over urine tests nowadays. Those with zero-tolerance policies, such as employers and courts, frequently rely on hair tests. One major advantage is their extended detection window, up to 90 days, plus the observed collection process minimizes cheating. Despite this, urine tests remain the gold standard for recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly valued as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair offers a historical record of alcohol and substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When sourced near the scalp, hair can provide a detection window of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It is suggested to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four pivotal phases in the lab processing of drug test results: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the initial stage where a sample is logged into a lab's system. This process verifies that the sample was correctly sealed and sent, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to rule out drug usage for most samples, any positive result must be confirmed to be valid for court. Samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening will undergo further confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial specimen and prepared for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from the hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), posing challenges that make hair drug screening the most complex methodology to execute.

Any confirmed positive from the screening process undergoes verification using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. Every phase, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is overseen following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests generally have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to tamper: Hair drug tests are difficult to manipulate, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Reveals usage patterns: They can demonstrate a timeline of drug consumption over an extended duration, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect immediate consumption: Drugs typically become detectable in hair around 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although they are often termed "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Wheelock, TX, hair follicle testing offers distinct advantages over traditional urine tests, particularly in terms of detection accuracy and reliability. Hair testing provides a substantially longer detection window, which can span up to 90 days.

While urine tests are limited to recent consumption, hair follicle tests analyze patterns of use over time. This feature significantly broadens the scope of detection and enhances overall accuracy.

  • Extended detection period
  • Enhanced reliability
  • Less chance of sample tampering

Extended Detection Window

Incorporating hair follicle testing in Wheelock, TX, provides a noteworthy advantage—an extended detection window. Unlike other testing methods, hair analysis can confirm drug use over a 90-day period, offering a comprehensive overview.

This extended period allows employers to thoroughly assess an individual's substance use history, enhancing informed hiring decisions and maintaining a drug-free environment.

  • 90-day detection period
  • In-depth substance use history
  • Better hiring insights

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Wheelock, TX, delivers a tamper-resistant solution for drug screening, significantly minimizing the risk of sample manipulation.

Due to the nature of hair collection, it's nearly impossible to alter or substitute samples, making it a highly reliable method. This assurance of authenticity provides unquestionable results for all stakeholders involved.

  • Highly tamper-resistant
  • Authentic results
  • Strengthened trust in outcomes

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
