Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Whitesboro, Texas. Whether you need a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, we are experts in this testing method and have centers across all cities nationwide that conduct hair analyses. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body can be used. Hair samples are evaluated for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing.

Over the past few years, drug testing methods increasingly favor hair follicle analysis. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts opt for hair testing over standard urine assessments. This test is favored by employers with strict drug policies, judges, and those overseeing probation. The major advantage lies in its longer detection window, roughly 90 days, carried out under observation, and it's difficult to tamper with. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers in the hair shaft as it continues to grow. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to around 90 days for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and uncomplicated to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panel tests beyond 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If no scalp hair is obtainable, a corresponding amount of body hair may be collected. In the context of head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair only, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system, ensuring the sample was sealed and transported correctly, establishing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any outstanding data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary evaluation for the presence of drugs. While Screening is a cost-effective strategy to rule out drug consumption in most cases, a positive screen must be validated for legal acceptance. Samples that indicate a potential positive result in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample signal a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction process. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a substantially lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), which is why hair drug analysis is the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples indicating presumptive positive results undergo a wash process before confirmation if required. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair directive and the certification to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection duration.
  • Resistance to fraud: It is exceedingly difficult to manipulate a hair drug test, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provision of historical usage: It can outline drug consumption patterns over a period, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments generally incur higher costs than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to traditional urine tests in Whitesboro, TX, the benefits are clear. Hair tests offer superior accuracy and a longer detection period, making them ideal for ensuring compliance with drug-free workplace policies.

Unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection window, hair follicle testing can detect substance use over the previous 90 days, providing a more comprehensive view of an individual's drug history.

Extended Detection Window

One of the primary advantages of hair follicle testing in Whitesboro, TX, is its extended detection window. Hair tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, offering employers a thorough assessment of an individual's substance history.

This prolonged detection period makes it easier for employers to make informed decisions about potential hires, ensuring that employees maintain the company's standards of conduct and safety.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
