In Whitewright, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in hair analysis for drugs and alcohol, our nationwide centers can conduct such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Hair tests can be tailored for various substances, including drugs and alcohol/ETG.

Drug testing methods have increasingly favored hair follicle analysis over recent years. Employers, judiciary systems, and substance abuse experts often prefer this method to urine tests. Zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probationary individuals benefit from hair tests due to their extended 90-day detection period, observed collection, and resistance to tampering. However, urine tests remain accurate for substances used in the preceding five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged timeline of substance intake by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. Collected near the scalp, a hair sample can yield a detection period of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample of approximately 1.5 inches, consisting of 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil), positioned closest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG testing, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advised to gather 150mg of hair. We advocate using a jeweler's scale for precise measurement. If scalp hair cannot be sourced, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (like facial or axillary).

Process Overview

Laboratory processing of drug test results consists of the following four major phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially entered into the lab’s system. This step involves confirming that the sample was properly sealed and transported, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial evaluation to identify potential drug abuse. Though cost-efficient, a positive result from Screening must undergo confirmation for legal acceptability. Samples presumed positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If Screening suggests a positive result, additional hair from the sample is utilized for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations lower than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of positive screenings is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples testing presumptive positive are subjected to washing before confirmation as appropriate. The complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under the oversight of the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection timeframe of urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, leading to more reliable results.
  • Archives usage patterns: Hair analysis can convey a chronicle of drug consumption over time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It generally requires 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Higher expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other testing procedures.
  • Variable outcomes: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly dubbed "hair follicle tests," this method analyzes the hair strand itself, excluding the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
