In Whitney, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in hair testing, we offer alcohol and drug hair tests across our testing locations in every city nationwide. Ideally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is necessary for the test, which can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized testing options.

Over recent years, the preference for hair follicle drug tests over traditional methods has increased. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and Substance Abuse experts often select hair tests over urine tests. A hair test is advantageous due to its extended detection window, lasting up to 90 days, conducted under observation to prevent tampering, though urine tests remain more effective for recent drug use, typically within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands offer a prolonged record of substance use by embedding markers within the hair as it grows. When sampled near the scalp, hair can present a detection timeline of up to roughly three months for both alcohol and other substances. Collection of hair is straightforward, less prone to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample size of 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, considered ideal for both screening and confirming results. For EtG, additional testing, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is recommended. If scalp hair is insufficient, a similar amount of body hair may be utilized. By 'head hair,' we specifically mean scalp hair, whereas 'body hair' encompasses all other types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test outcome consists of four pivotal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial entry of a sample into the laboratory system. This step involves ensuring that the sample was properly sealed and transported, generating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any additional data input not covered by an electronic tracking system.

Screening carries out a preliminary rapid test for illicit substances. While Screening is a budget-friendly method to negate drug use in most samples, any positive result mandates confirmation for legal validity. Samples with presumptive positive outcomes in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

If Screening suggests a presumptive positive result, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, substances are isolated from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a particularly challenging method to conduct.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation via techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, any samples presumed positive are cleansed as necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation as well as the compliance to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug testing can discover drug usage over a span of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter window.
  • Challenging to adulterate: Hair drug tests are notably difficult to manipulate, resulting in higher accuracy.
  • Provides chronological data: Offers insight into drug usage patterns over time, beyond just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite levels within the hair.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the procedure actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Whitney, TX favors hair follicle testing due to its superior detection accuracy over traditional urine tests. Its reliability in drug detection surpasses that of urine tests. Hair tests boast a prolonged detection window and are not susceptible to typical cheating methods that urine tests face. This ensures more trustable and comprehensive results for those reliant on screening accuracy.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Whitney, TX offers an extended detection window, identifying drug use up to 90 days prior. For employers, this provides a broad understanding of an individual’s substance use history.
Unlike other tests, the extensive timeline allows for a more thorough evaluation, giving employers the details necessary for informed decision-making regarding prospective or current employees.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

One of the distinct benefits of hair follicle testing in Whitney, TX is its tamper-resistant nature. Unlike urine tests, hair samples are not easy to adulterate.
The observed process and biological nature of hair analysis significantly minimize the risk of tampering, assuring the dependability of the test results, and offering employers confidence in their screenings.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
