Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Whitsett, Texas. Specializing in hair and alcohol testing, we have facilities nationwide ready to perform your hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body suffices. With our expertise, we test for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored hair testing options.

Recent trends in drug testing lean towards hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair tests over urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probation individuals due to longer detection spans, up to 90 days, with observed collection, making them hard to cheat. Yet, urine tests are best for detecting recent, within 5 days, drug use.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a historical record of substance use by capturing biological markers inside the fibers of the hair as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer an approximate three-month period for detecting alcohol and drug usage. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, roughly containing 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields about 100mg of hair, which is ideal for testing and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or screenings beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. It's recommended to weigh the hair on a scale suited for jewelry. If scalp hair is not available, an identical amount of body hair is an alternative. When we talk about head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial or underarm hair).

Process Overview

The lab processes drug test results through four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial phase of incorporating a sample into a lab's system. This step includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transferred, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entries not captured by an electronic tracking system.

Screening consists of a preliminary rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug use for most samples, any positive indication requires confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Samples showing presumed positives in Screening necessitate a follow-up validation.

When a sample tests as presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample to prepare for Extraction. Here, substances are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or saliva), which is why hair testing is a highly challenging method to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumed positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if needed. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the certification for ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug analyses can register drug intake for roughly 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection time.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is extremely challenging to alter a hair drug exam, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers summary data: It can reveal a trend of drug consumption over time, not just recent occurrence.

Limitations:

  • Not capable of capturing recent intake: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations typically cost more than other testing methodologies.
  • Result discrepancies: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact the drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly named "hair follicle tests", this assessment evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle underneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
