Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Willis, Texas. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol testing, our services are available at testing centers located in numerous cities across the nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp are required, but body hair can also be used. Analysis can be conducted to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized testing options.

The hair follicle drug test is increasingly utilized in recent years as a preferred method for drug screening. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals favor this test over the standard urine test. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and those on probation often rely on its results. The standout advantage is the longer detection window, typically up to 90 days, with an observed collection process, making it difficult to manipulate. Despite this, urine tests remain the most reliable method for detection of drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests are increasingly recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. As hair grows, it embeds biomarkers within its fiber, offering a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drug exposure. When taken near the scalp, hair samples provide a detection period of up to around three months for alcohol and drugs. Sample collection is straightforward, the risk of tampering is low, and samples are easy to transport.

A sample size of 1.5 inches, comprising roughly 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) and taken nearest the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for testing and validation. For EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is suggested. A jeweler’s scale is recommended for precise measurement. In cases where scalp hair isn’t available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. The term "head hair" specifies only scalp hair, whereas "body hair" includes all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This stage includes verifying the sample’s seal and proper shipment, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is the preliminary evaluation for substance abuse. Although Screening provides an economical way to discard drug usage in most samples, any positive results must be verified for court admissibility. Samples that test positive at this stage necessitate a further confirmation.

For samples indicated as positive during Screening, additional hair is acquired from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. This phase extracts drugs from hair in significantly lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a complex methodology.

The Confirmation of positive screenings is executed using techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed as necessary. From Accessioning through Confirmation, the entire lab process is assessed according to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests detect drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection window.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, rendering more reliable results.
  • Provides historical data: It reveals a pattern of drug consumption over a duration, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It generally requires 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests tend to be more expensive compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Variations in results: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Often dubbed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Willis, TX, offers significant advantages over traditional urine tests. Its long detection window allows for the identification of drug use over a 90-day period, opposed to the shorter window of urine tests.

Superior detection accuracy and reliability are hallmarks of hair testing, providing peace of mind for employers. While urine tests are often tampered with, hair testing offers a secure, foolproof alternative.

Extended Detection Window

In Willis, TX, hair follicle testing provides an extended detection window, covering up to 90 days of drug use history. This gives employers a comprehensive substance use overview like no other method.

By detecting long-term patterns in substance use, hair tests offer a detailed analysis that aids in informed decision-making about potential employees. This extended window sets hair testing apart from other methods.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Willis, TX, significantly reduce the risk of sample adulteration, offering credible results. Unlike other methods, these tests ensure secure, tamper-resistant testing of individuals.

The advanced collection process prevents any changes to the sample, enhancing result authenticity and maintaining the integrity of the test. This ensures unquestionable reliability across all screenings.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
