Located in Winfield, TX, Accredited Drug Testing excels in comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. For hair or alcohol testing, our centers nationwide are well equipped to administer these tests. Typically, hair samples are collected from the head or body with 1.5 to 2 inches of growth. Our hair tests provide insights into drug and alcohol use, including customized options.

Recently, the appeal of hair follicle drug testing has risen, becoming preferable over urine testing among employers, courts, and substance abuse experts. Employers with strict no-drug policies, legal courts, or probation scenarios benefit from hair testing due to its 90-day drug detection window and tamper-resistant collection process. While hair tests excel in long-term detection, urine tests remain superior for identifying recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method to uncover drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of substances by holding onto biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal exposure to substances over a period of up to about three months. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and uncomplicated to transport.

A 1.5-inch length consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp amounts to 100mg, which is the optimal sample size for evaluation and verification. For tests involving EtG, additional substances, and/or more than 10 panels, it is suggested to gather 150mg of hair. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is advisable. Should head hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be taken. When referencing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Examination Procedure

The core steps in the laboratory processing of drug test results encompass: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is first entered into the laboratory’s system. This phase verifies the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigns it an anonymous LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for drug abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective strategy to exclude drug use in the majority of samples, a positive result must be confirmed for legal acceptance. Any samples with a provisional positive result in Screening require further confirmation.

When a sample shows a tentative positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction stage. Here, substances are obtained from hair at a substantially lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring why hair drug screening presents complex challenges.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods are employed to verify any positive Screening outcomes. All samples that show provisional positivity are washed prior to verification as per requirement. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the whole laboratory process is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug evaluations can identify substance use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to circumvent: Manipulating a hair drug test is very challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Shows usage history: It offers insights into a pattern of drug consumption over a duration, not merely recent usage.

Disadvantages:

  • Recent usage undetectable: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs versus alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although sometimes called "hair follicle tests", the evaluation actually analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Winfield, TX proves its mettle over traditional urine tests through unmatched detection accuracy. Hair tests effectively capture long-term drug use, presenting a clear chronological history unlike the shorter urine analysis window.

The superior detection abilities of hair tests, spanning up to 90 days, make them ideal for employers demanding stringent screening processes. Reliability is evident, with hair tests eliminating chances of sample tampering, unlike urine samples.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
