Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing to Wink, Texas residents. When you require hair drug or alcohol assessments, trust Accredited Drug Testing as your hair testing expert. With locations nationwide, including all major cities, getting a hair follicle test is accessible. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of the head or body is needed. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer bespoke testing options.

In recent times, the shift in drug testing procedures has increasingly favored hair follicle tests over traditional methods. Many businesses, judicial systems, and substance monitoring professionals prefer hair drug tests to regular urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug-use rules, judicial bodies, and those on probation are frequent adopters of hair follicle tests. The main advantage of these tests is their extended detection window of up to 90 days, utilizing a monitored collection that is difficult to manipulate. Yet, for detecting substance use within the past five days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a timeline of alcohol and drugs by locking biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When collected close to the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, hard to tamper with, and straightforward to ship.

An ideal sample for analysis and confirmation is a 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (around the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, providing 100mg of hair. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it's advised to collect 150mg of the sample. It is recommended to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair includes all other hair kinds (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage where a sample is processed into a laboratory's system. This process includes checking that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry that an electronic chain of custody system does not provide.

Screening is a preliminary and rapid examination for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective method to exclude drug usage in most cases, a positive screen must be verified through confirmation to be considered valid in legal settings. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening need a secondary confirmation.

In the event of a sample testing presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is pulled from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair, albeit at a significantly lower concentration than other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as needed. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection window.
  • Challenging to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Shows historical data: It can demonstrate a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: It generally takes 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
