In Wortham, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. If you're in need of a drug or alcohol hair test, we're experts in hair testing, with facilities nationwide capable of conducting these tests. A length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from either the head or body is needed for most cases. Hair tests can identify drugs and alcohol/ETG, along with other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has been used more frequently for drug tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. These tests are favored by those with zero-tolerance policies, legal bodies, and individuals on probation. The key advantage is a longer detection period of up to 90 days, with observed collections that are hard to manipulate. Nevertheless, for drug use screening in the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the strands' fibers, hair offers an extended history of alcohol and other drug consumption. Hair collected near the scalp can reveal alcohol and drug use up to roughly 3 months prior. The collection process is straightforward, while tampering is challenging, and transportation is uncomplicated.

A strand sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hairs (similar in size to a #2 pencil), amounts to 100mg of hair, which is optimal for evaluation and verification. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weight of 150mg is advised. We recommend using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equivalent portion of body hair may be gathered. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory handling of a drug test result comprises four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails initiating a sample's transfer into a laboratory's system. This process includes confirming the sample’s sealed and proper shipment, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents an initial, rapid assessment for drug misuse. While Screening is an economically feasible method to discard drug usage in most samples, a positive screen mandates confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples showing presumptive positivity during Screening require a subsequent confirmation.

Presumptive positivity in Screening necessitates extracting additional hair from the original sample for processing in Extraction. Here, drugs are derived from hair at substantially lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug examination.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Necessary samples are washed before confirmation. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation falls under review using both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 certification standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Drug use remains detectable for up to 90 days in hair, unlike urine exams with shorter detection spans.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, thus ensuring increased result accuracy.
  • Historical consumption data: It offers a usage pattern over time rather than only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs require roughly 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug exams incur higher costs compared to alternate drug evaluation methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", this procedure assesses the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
