Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Yancey, Texas. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing offers expertise, and our testing centers nationwide are equipped to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from the crown or body. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more common in drug testing methods. Many employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts prefer hair drug tests over urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals on probation frequently rely on these tests. The main advantage of a hair follicle drug test is its detection window of up to 90 days and its resistance to tampering, though urine tests remain superior for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective technique for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair shaft, hair offers a comprehensive historical record of alcohol and drug use. When taken near the scalp, hair samples can reveal drug and alcohol use over a duration of up to three months. Hair is easy to obtain, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient for transportation.

A 1.5-inch section comprising approximately 200 hair strands (roughly equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for both initial screening and verification. For EtG tests or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale is recommended for accurate measurement. If head hair is not available, an equivalent portion of body hair can be used. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other types such as facial and underarm hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, a sample is initially integrated into the lab’s processing system. This involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and delivered, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data input not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial evaluation for drug presence. Although Screening serves as an efficient method to exclude drugs in the bulk of samples, confirmation is required for any positive results to be valid in legal settings. Presumptively positive samples from Screening necessitate further confirmation testing.

When a sample is deemed presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction process. This phase involves isolating drugs from the hair at lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), contributing to the complexity of hair drug testing.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods are used for Confirmation of positive Screening outcomes. All presumptive positive samples receive cleaning prior to confirmation as required. The complete laboratory workflow, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is audited in accordance with the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter time frame.
  • High level of accuracy: Due to the challenge in tampering, hair drug tests offer more reliable results.
  • Historical usage pattern: Hair tests can unravel a timeline of drug use, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent consumption: A period of 5-7 days is needed for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug tests are pricier than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Influences such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: The test often labeled as "hair follicle tests" actually analyzes the hair itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
