At Accredited Drug Testing, we provide thorough hair follicle drug assessments in Yznaga, Texas. If a hair or alcohol test is needed, our expertise ensures a comprehensive service. We operate across the U.S., with centers equipped for these tests. Generally, hair from the crown or body is sufficient if it measures 1.5 to 2 inches. Our hair tests can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to specific needs.

The trend toward using hair follicle drug tests for screening has been increasing, with more employers, judicial bodies, and substance specialists opting for it over traditional urine tests. Companies with strict drug-free mandates, legal institutions, or probationary programs prefer hair tests due to their extensive detection period, up to 90 days. With this test, evasion is difficult. Nevertheless, urine tests remain unmatched for identifying recent usage within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair archives a prolonged history of alcohol and narcotics by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair offers a detection window for alcohol and drugs of up to about 3 months. Collection is straightforward, tampering is relatively challenging, and shipping is convenient.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprised of around 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. Measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale is recommended. If scalp hair isn't an option, an equal volume of body hair can be used. References to head hair pertain strictly to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Overview of the Procedure

The lab processing of a drug test result includes four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning starts with integrating a sample into a lab's system. This step confirms proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fills in any necessary data not supplied by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is the initial brief verification for drug abuse. Although it's a cost-efficient approach to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be verified for court use. Samples that seem positive during Screening need secondary confirmation.

For specimens that test positive during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower levels than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), marking hair drug screening as the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all samples presumed positive are cleaned as required. The complete laboratory workflow, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes evaluation under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine testing, which has a reduced detection span.
  • Hard to falsify: It's significantly challenging to manipulate results of a hair drug test, ensuring higher accuracy.
  • Provides past usage data: It illustrates a pattern of drug consumption over time, not just recent usage.

Challenges:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Detection of drugs in hair typically takes 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result fluctuations: Drug metabolite concentration in hair can be influenced by aspects like hair color and personal differences in hair growth.

Clarification: Often called "hair follicle tests", these tests actually analyze the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Yznaga, TX, hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine tests in numerous aspects. Hair tests offer a much broader detection window, allowing for a more extended history of substance usage. In contrast to urine tests, these examinations provide increased accuracy by detecting a wide array of substances and reducing instances of false negatives, enhancing reliability in drug testing policies.

Extended Detection Window

In Yznaga, TX, extended detection windows offered by hair follicle testing provide a panoramic view into an individual’s long-term drug usage, typically up to 90 days. Consequently, employers receive a comprehensive insight into the drug habits of their workforce or prospective hires, ensuring decisions are made with a full understanding of an individual's history, which surpasses the short-term monitoring possible with urine tests.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing significantly lowers the risk of sample adulteration, offering tamper-resistant, reliable results in Yznaga, TX. The likelihood of falsified outcomes is reduced as hair samples are less susceptible to manipulation compared to urine. Thus, employers gain peace of mind with the integrity of test results, which translates into more reliable, trustworthy reports that are crucial for making informed employment decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
