Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Alton, Utah. When hair drug or alcohol tests are needed, we specialize in them. We have facilities nationwide ready for hair testing. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head, though body hair may suffice. Our tests evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized options.

In recent years, drug testing methods have increasingly featured hair follicle analysis. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts opt for hair tests over urine tests. They are essential for zero-tolerance policies and probation cases. A hair follicle drug test's main advantage is its longer detection window, up to 90 days, with a monitored collection process that is hard to cheat. Nevertheless, for the most recent 5-day drug use, urine tests remain most effective.

What it is, How it works

The recognition of hair testing has elevated it as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair archives a prolonged record of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can provide roughly a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 hairs (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal sample for both screening and affirmation. For EtG, other add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest weighing the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be taken. When referring to head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair refers to all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test result is processed in a laboratory through four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase of entering a sample into a laboratory’s system, verifying that the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input not available via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid test for drug abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to negate drug usage on most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be deemed valid in legal settings. Any samples that display presumptive positivity in Screening need to undergo secondary confirmation.

If positivity is presumed in Screening, more hair is derived from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are retrieved from hair at far lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug testing is the most intricate methodology to conduct.

Confirmation for any positive screening is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeline: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is particularly hard to deceive a hair drug test, rendering results more reliable.
  • Offers historical insight: It can demonstrate a pattern of drug usage over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result Variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although sometimes labeled as "hair follicle tests", the test is actually performed on the hair strand and not the scalp's hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
