Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug diagnostics in Angle, Utah. Whether it's for drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with numerous centers across the Nation equipped to perform these tests efficiently. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head's crown or body suffice. Hair tests detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other tailored options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly favored for drug detection. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse specialists frequently adopt this method, choosing hair tests over conventional urine tests. Organizations with strict no-drug policies benefit from using hair tests, which provide up to 90 days' detection time, are collected under direct observation, and offer strong resistance against tampering. Nonetheless, for use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting alcohol and drug consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair, hair reveals a prolonged timeline of drug and alcohol use. When taken near the scalp, hair samples can offer an approximate 3-month detection period for drugs and alcohol. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, presents challenges to tampering, and is convenient to transport.

Gathering a 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg—an optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen amount of 150mg is advised. It's suggested to determine the specimen’s weight using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be acquired, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we are specifically referring to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory's database. This step ensures the sample was sealed and shipped appropriately, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional entries not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents a preliminary and efficient examination for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective method of eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed before it can be considered valid in legal proceedings. Samples that are presumptively positive during Screening must undergo additional confirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair from the original specimen is used and processed for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration than in alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

The final Confirmation of any positive Screening result is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptively positive samples are washed before confirmation if necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection window.
  • Challenging to evade: The difficulty of manipulating a hair drug test increases the accuracy of the results.
  • Chronological data: Hair analysis can portray a pattern of substance use over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs only become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug tests are pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variation: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly mistaken as "hair follicle tests," the analysis actually focuses on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Angle, UT, hair follicle tests are superior in detecting substances compared to traditional urine tests. Their longer detection window ensures a more accurate history of drug use, making them the preferred choice for many professionals.

These tests provide a sharp edge in accuracy and reliability, especially for organizations maintaining stringent drug-free environments. Hair testing's extended detection period is invaluable compared to the limited scope of urine testing.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle tests offer an extended detection window, typically up to 90 days, providing a comprehensive view of substance use. For employers in Angle, UT, this translates to a thorough understanding of an individual's drug history.

This lengthy period ensures that even infrequent usage doesn't go unnoticed, portraying a clearer picture of an employee's or applicant's substance behavior, unlike shorter-span tests.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Angle, UT, hair follicle testing presents a formidable deterrent against tampering. The method's inherent design prevents adulteration and swap attempts, yielding trustworthy results each time.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
