Accredited Drug Testing provides complete hair follicle drug tests in Brigham City, Utah. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol tests, Accredited Drug Testing is your specialist, with centers nationwide that offer hair testing services. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the crown of the head or from other parts of the body is generally required. Hair assessments are available for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing options.

In recent years, conducting hair follicle drug tests has become increasingly popular. Many organizations, judiciaries, and Substance Abuse experts favor hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. These tests are widely used by employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationers. The chief advantage of hair tests is their substantial detection period of up to 90 days, collected under supervision, and not easily tampered with. However, for detecting drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a record keeper of alcohol and drugs' long-term history by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When clipped near the scalp, hair can reveal evidence of alcohol and other drugs for a duration of up to roughly three months. Hair sampling is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easily transportable.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising roughly 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil), offers 100mg, which is ideal for screening and validation. For tests such as EtG, additional panels, or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale is suggested for measuring the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair. The term body hair encompasses all other hair types, such as facial and axillary.

Process Overview

The laboratory drug test processing encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the preliminary integration of a sample into the laboratory system, ensuring the sample's seal and shipment were intact, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any extra data entry not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial spot-check for drug abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples returning presumptively positive during Screening mandate further confirmation.

For samples showing presumptive positivity at the Screening phase, additional hair is sourced from the original specimen for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are drawn from hair, though at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive Screening results is performed by GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presuming positivity undergo a wash before confirmation, as necessary. Each stage, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a narrower detection period.
  • Difficulty to circumvent: The challenge of tampering with a hair drug test ensures more reliable outcomes.
  • Pattern analysis: It offers insights into drug use trends over time, beyond just current consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for substances to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other testing techniques.
  • Variability in outcomes: Variables like hair pigmentation and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
