In Central, Utah, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol assessment, our expertise is unmatched. Nationwide, our testing centers are equipped to perform hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body is necessary. Our analysis includes drugs and alcohol/ETG among other tailored testing options.

Hair follicle drug tests have gained prominence recently as a preferred method over standard urine tests, utilized by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals. Employers with strict drug policies, courts, and probation services increasingly mandate hair drug tests. The test offers an extended detection period of up to 90 days, is conducted under supervised conditions, and proves difficult to falsify. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair encases a long-term record of alcohol and other substances by holding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When taken close to the scalp, hair can reveal up to about a 3-month look-back period for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to send.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in size) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for examination and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is ideal. We advise weighing the sample on a jeweler’s balance. If scalp hair is unattainable, a similar quantity of body hair can be taken. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for drug test results involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial processing of a sample into a lab’s system. This entails confirming that the specimen was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage on most specimens, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be valid in court. Any presumptive positive results in Screening must undergo subsequent confirmation.

If a specimen yields a presumptive positive during Screening, more hair is withdrawn from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. Here, substances are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), which accounts for why hair drug screening represents the most challenging methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens are cleaned before confirmation as required. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can disclose drug consumption for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests which have a briefer detection window.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely difficult, thereby enhancing accuracy.
  • Gives historical insights: It can exhibit a timeline of drug usage over a prolonged span, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It typically requires 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual growth patterns can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Commonly mislabeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle underneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
