Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Delta, Utah. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol tests, our expertise in hair testing is unparalleled, with centers located in cities nationwide ready to conduct hair examinations. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. Hair analyses can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for substance screening. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts increasingly prefer hair tests over conventional urine tests. Used by organizations with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationers, hair tests offer an advantage with their extended detection window, often up to 90 days, ensuring an observed and secure collection process that is hard to tamper with, whereas urine tests remain best for recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The strands of hair capture biomarkers within their fibers, offering an extended timeline of drug and alcohol history. When trimmed close to the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use for nearly a 3-month period. The collection process of hair is straightforward, cumbersome to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in thickness) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels above 10, a sample amount of 150mg is advised. It's best to use a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, a similar quantity of body hair may suffice. References to head hair are exclusively about scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test outcome consists of four stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes preliminary processing to integrate it into a laboratory’s system, ensuring the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any supplemental data absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial and quick evaluation for drug presence. Though Screening is a cost-effective means to rule out substances in many cases, any positive indication must be confirmed for legal validity. Presumptive positive samples in Screening necessitate additional confirmation procedures.

If a sample flags as presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair from the original sample is prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are obtained from hair at lower concentrations than methods like urine or oral fluid tests, making hair drug screening particularly challenging.

Confirmation of any positive screen is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive specimens are washed before confirmation as required. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is examined under the CAP Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug testing offers a detection period of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which detect drug use within a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to evade: The ability to cheat a hair drug test is minimal, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use over a longer timeframe, beyond immediate consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It requires approximately 5-7 days for substances to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are often pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Aspects like hair color and individual growth rates can influence the level of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Though often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the actual examination targets the hair strand and not the follicle itself beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
