Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle substance tests in Echo, Utah. If you're seeking a hair-based drug or alcohol assessment, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in hair analysis, with test centers available in every city across the nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. Hair samples can be evaluated for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, drug screening methods have increasingly shifted to hair follicle testing. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts often prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle assessments are employed by firms with strict no-drug policies, legal authorities, and those on probation. The chief advantage of hair tests is the extended detection period of up to 90 days, collected in a monitored setting, making tampering nearly impossible. However, for identifying recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective approach for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the strands, hair provides an extended record of alcohol and drug presence. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of up to about 3 months. It's straightforward to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp produces 100mg of hair, the perfect amount for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels above 10, it is advised to use 150mg of the sample. Use a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair might be used. The term head hair exclusively refers to scalp hair, while body hair indicates any other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Procedure Summary

The core components in processing a lab drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary handling of a sample in a lab’s system. This entails checking that the sample is properly sealed and transported, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling out any information not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a rapid preliminary evaluation for substances of concern. Although Screening is economically feasible for negating drug usage in most samples, a positive result requires verification to be legally viable. Samples that test tentatively positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample appears positive in the Screening phase, additional hair from the original sample is utilized for Extraction. During this phase, substances are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug analysis is challenging to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening finding is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumably positive samples undergo a wash before confirmation as required. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire lab process is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and meets ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation criteria.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeline: Hair drug assessments can identify substance usage for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine analyses with shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to evade: Evading a hair drug assessment is notably challenging, enhancing result precision.
  • Offers historical insights: This method can reveal trends in drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments generally carry higher costs than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual growth differences can influence metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", these tests examine the hair strands rather than the follicles below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing offers notable advantages over urine screening in Echo, UT. Accuracy is paramount; hair tests detect long-term drug use, while urine tests are limited to recent consumption. This makes hair follicle tests more advantageous for chronic use detection.

Employers favor hair tests due to their reliability in detecting prolonged substance use, going beyond short-term outcomes typical of urine analyses.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Echo, UT, affords a lengthy detection window, capturing drug use histories up to 90 days prior. This extended range provides a thorough overview of a subject’s substance involvement.

This essential timeline broadens the scope of inquiry, offering employers insight into an individual’s longer-term habits, unlike short-span tests that focus only on recent drug use.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Echo, UT, embraces hair follicle testing as a method highly resistant to tampering. Unlike urine samples, hair provides a tamper-resistant alternative, ensuring integrity during the test and safeguarding against sample manipulation.

This resistance boosts confidence in test results, reassuring employers and legal systems about the credibility and precision of each analysis conducted.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
