Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Farr West, Utah. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol assessment, we are experts in hair testing with testing centers across various cities nationwide, facilitating a hair test. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head crown or body is generally sufficient. Hair assessments can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other specific testing needs.

Over recent years, the application of hair follicle drug assessments has increased in prevalence. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals now favor hair drug assessments over the conventional urine test. Hair follicle assessments cater to zero-tolerance employers, courts, and individuals under probation orders. Chiefly, the extended detection period of up to 90 days, coupled with the stringent collection process, makes this assessment difficult to falsify except when screening for drug use within the last 5 days, where urinalysis remains superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a compelling method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encases biomarkers in the strands of hair as they grow, presenting a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drug use. When collected right at the scalp, hair can reveal a detection window of nearly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and can be shipped with ease.

Securing a 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil), located nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, an optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is recommended. It's advisable to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent volume of body hair may be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other types of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The main four stages in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the preliminary processing of a sample within a lab’s framework. It entails confirming appropriate sealing and shipping of the sample, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid analysis for substances of abuse. Even though Screening is a cost-effective approach to exclude drug use in most samples, confirming a positive screen is essential for it to be court-admissible. Any samples deemed potentially positive during Screening require additional confirmation.

Should a sample be potentially positive during the Screening phase, more hair is taken from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this process, drugs are isolated from the hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening notably challenging to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening result is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation if needed. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests identify drug use for as long as 90 days, while urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Efforts to cheat a hair drug test are very challenging, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Offers historical insights: It illustrates a path of drug usage over time, not merely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Diversities in outcomes: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Despite often being termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
