In Faust, Utah, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. If you require testing for drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair testing spans across the nation with centers available in every city, ready to conduct tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are needed from the crown or body hair can be used. Hair is analyzed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or options are tailored to your needs.

The trend in drug testing in recent times has leaned more towards hair follicle tests. Many businesses, judicial entities, and Substance Abuse professionals opt for these tests over the traditional urine analysis. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and those on probation use hair follicle tests. These tests have the advantage of a more extended detection window, up to 90 days, are conducted under observation, and are almost impossible to tamper with. Still, for detecting recent drug usage within five days, urine tests hold the edge for accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption, hair testing captures a prolonged history by storing biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers. When collected near the scalp, hair reveals an approximately three-month detection window for drugs and alcohol. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising around 200 hair strands (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We advise using a jeweler's scale to weigh the specimen. Should scalp hair be unavailable, the same quantity of body hair may be used. Reference to head hair is specifically about scalp hair. In contrast, body hair refers to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test outcome consists of four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves incorporating a sample into a lab’s system initially. This phase confirms the sample’s proper sealing and shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial quick inspection for drugs of abuse. While a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be legally permissible. Any samples yielding presumptive positives in Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

If the Screening phase indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and set for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted at considerably lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging procedure.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as needed. Every step from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair tests detect drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring greater accuracy in results.
  • Records of past use: Deliver insights into a drug use pattern over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Can't detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other methods.
  • Result variances: Hair color and individual hair growth discrepancies can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In comparing hair follicle testing and traditional urine tests in Faust, UT, the former stands out due to superior accuracy and reliability. Hair testing offers a much broader window for detecting drug use, ensuring that recent as well as more remote consumption is revealed. These tests are less prone to manipulation, enhancing their credibility and making them a preferable choice for many entities.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window offered by hair follicle testing is a significant advantage in Faust, UT. With the ability to identify drug usage for up to 90 days, it provides employers with a comprehensive understanding of an individual’s substance history. This prolonged detection capability is advantageous for organizations seeking thorough assessments.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
