In Gilluly, Utah, Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in hair tests, we have facilities in all cities Nationwide capable of administering these tests. Typically, hair from your head's crown or body is used if it's between 1.5 to 2 inches long. Hair testing can be carried out for drugs, alcohol/ETG or tailored testing requirements.

Hair follicle tests have increasingly become part of the drug testing procedure. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse authorities are increasingly opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by those with strict drug use policies, judicial systems, and probation officers. They offer a significant advantage with an extended detection window of drug use, usually up to 90 days, under a monitored collection setting, making it almost cheat-proof. However, for recent drug use detection within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting alcohol and drug usage. Hair serves as a chronicle for alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the follicles of the hair as it grows. When clipped close to the scalp, hair can offer nearly a 3-month detection term for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches comprising roughly 200 strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the quintessential amount for testing. For EtG analyses, additional testing, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the hair is suggested. It is advisable to use a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample weight. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent portion of body hair can be taken. In the context of head hair, it pertains specifically to scalp hair. Body hair signifies all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal stages involved in the lab processing of a drug test result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary stage where a sample is processed into the lab’s system. This step involves checking that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any outstanding data entry not submitted via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical way to dismiss drug utilization in most cases, a positive result demands confirmation to be legally recognized. Samples that yield a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive at the Screening step, more hair from the original sample is utilized for Extraction. At this juncture, drugs are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug screening one of the more challenging methodologies to carry out.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples yielding a presumptive positive are washed before confirmation if required. The entire procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is monitored under the standards set by CAP (College of American Pathologists) for Hair designation and the accreditation by ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection span.
  • Resistance to deception: It is exceedingly hard to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing result reliability.
  • Historical reference: It maps a pattern of drug consumption over time, beyond only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Lacks immediate use detection: Drugs become traceable in hair in about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than some other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Though commonly named "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
