Renowned for comprehensive hair follicle drug tests, Accredited Drug Testing serves Glendale, Utah, among other locations. For precise hair or alcohol testing, our specialization ensures reliable results across our nationwide testing centers. Typically, hair samples from the crown or body, measuring 1.5 to 2 inches, are adequate. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific analyses.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become a preferred method in drug testing protocols. Many employers, judicial systems, and addiction specialists opt for hair testing over traditional urine analysis. This method is favored by organizations enforcing strict no-drug policies and by probation officers due to its extended detection ability—often spanning up to 90 days. Despite its efficacy, urine tests remain the top choice for identifying recent drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments have emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive record of substances like alcohol over time by embedding biomarkers within the structure of the hair as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal the presence of alcohol and drugs for a period of up to roughly three months. Hair samples are easy to acquire, relatively resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 strands (akin to a #2 pencil in thickness) from the area nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both preliminary and detailed analyses. For EtG, enhanced tests, or panels exceeding ten, a specimen weighing 150mg is advisable. Using a jeweler's scale to measure the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent quantity of hair from the body may be used. When discussing head hair, we are specifically addressing scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory process consists of four main phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the start of processing a sample into the laboratory framework, which includes confirming that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing data entry absent from the electronic tracking system.

Screening offers a preliminary assessment for drug use. Though it is a cost-effective way to eliminate most samples from further testing, results that indicate drug presence require verification to be legally defensible. Any sample marked as presumptively positive during Screening needs confirmation.

If Screening results are presumptively positive, additional hair is drawn from the initial specimen for the Extraction procedure. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug testing one of the most complex methodologies to undertake.

Positive Screening outcomes undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples marked with presumptive positives are cleansed prior to Confirmation as necessary. The laboratory process from Accessioning through Confirmation is inspected according to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited following ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to ninety days, unlike urine tests which detect recent use over shorter spans.
  • Hard to manipulate results: Cheating on a hair test is challenging, enhancing the credibility of the results.
  • Insight into historical usage: It reveals drug usage patterns over time, offering historical insights rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent consumption detection: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is generally more costly than alternative test methodologies.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences may influence metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though termed "hair follicle tests," these tests actually examine the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
