Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Greenwich, Utah. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialization in hair testing assures accessibility with our numerous testing centers across cities nationwide. Typically, hair measuring 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body hair is sufficient for a valid test. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific types of hair analysis.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly favored hair follicle drug tests. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists often opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Organizations with strict drug-free policies, court systems, and monitored individuals on probation prefer using hair follicle tests. A key advantage of these tests is their extensive 90-day detection period, secure collection process, and difficulty in tampering. However, for identifying drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a compelling means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands capture biomarkers within their fibers, offering a prolonged record of substance use. Collected near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection history of alcohol and drugs for up to three months. Its collection process is straightforward, with minimal risk of adulteration, and it's simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil), when taken near the scalp, yields 100mg, ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests extending beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair is inaccessible, the equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. Scalp hair refers exclusively to head hair, while body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial lab processing, ensuring it is properly sealed and shipped, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary assessment for drug presence. Although Screening is a cost-effective method for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive outcome necessitates confirmation for courtroom acceptance. Presumptive positives in Screening demand secondary confirmation.

If a presumptive positive arises during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the sample for further processing in the Extraction stage. Here, substances are extracted from the hair at notably lower concentrations than in alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), which is why hair drug screening presents the greatest challenge in performance.

Confirmation of any screening positives employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Prior to confirmation, presumptive positive samples are washed as necessary. The full laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and holds accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests capture drug usage for up to 90 days, compared to the shorter detection period of urine tests.
  • Challenges in cheating: Hair drug tests are notably resistant to tampering, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Insights into usage patterns: They outline a timeline of substance use rather than solely recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Lack of recent usage detection: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than other methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations within the hair.

Note: Commonly mislabeled as "hair follicle tests", these evaluations focus on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Greenwich, UT

Compared to traditional urine tests, hair follicle testing offers significantly improved detection accuracy and reliability. While urine tests detect recent substance use, hair tests reveal long-term drug history, providing employers with a robust picture of an individual’s potential substance abuse patterns.

Moreover, hair tests offer superior detection through a non-invasive and more tamper-proof method than their urine counterparts.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Greenwich, UT

Hair follicle testing reveals substance use over an extensive period, typically up to 90 days, granting employers an in-depth view of an individual’s substance history. This extended detection window is crucial for companies seeking a comprehensive understanding of employee behavior over time.

Employers benefit from this method by accessing a fuller picture, enabling more informed decisions and a reduction in potential workplace risks.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
