Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary handling of a specimen into the lab’s system. This encompasses verifying the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening consists of a preliminary rapid drug check. Screening is an economical means to exclude drug usage for most specimens, but a positive screen requires confirmation to be legally valid. Any specimen that is presumptively positive during Screening needs additional verification.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for preparation in Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening particularly challenging.

Confirmation for any positive screen result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

The manuscripts provide valuable insights into novel analytical techniques, biomarkers, pharmacokinetics, forensic applications, and ethical considerations.
