Accessioning involves the initial sample processing within a laboratory's system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing information not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly method to rule out drug use for most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be admissible in legal proceedings. Samples that are presumptively positive during Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during the Screening phase, more hair is retrieved from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are obtained from hair at considerably lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen is conducted via methods such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as required. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation of ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

The joint meeting of the Society of Hair Testing (SoHT) and the Italian Group of Forensic Toxicologists (GTFI) was organized in Verona, June 8–10, 2022, and hosted by the Legal Medicine team of the Verona University Hospital, directed by Franco Tagliaro together with Federica Bortolotti and Rossella Gottardo.

The legal framework surrounding hair testing and the achievement of guidelines to ensure fairness, accuracy, and confidentiality in drug testing practices have also been discussed,and the SoHT consensus on general hair testing and testing for drugs of abuse was presented at the meeting and published as a Letter to the Editor.
