In Harrisville, Utah, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Specializing in hair testing, our centers are available nationwide. For accurate results, we require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or accommodate custom options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests are preferred by many employers, courts, and professionals over urine tests due to their enhanced reliability. Employers with strict drug policies find hair tests useful due to their extended 90-day detection period and secure collection methods. However, urine tests are best for recent drug use detection within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for detecting consumption of alcohol and drugs. Hair strands preserve a prolonged record of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers during hair growth. When collected near the scalp, hair can provide an approximate 3-month window of detection for alcohol and other substances. This method is easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields about 100mg of hair, regarded as the ideal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG tests, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of hair is advised. It's recommended to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, the equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. References to head hair pertain exclusively to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test laboratory processing encompasses four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial incorporation of a sample into the lab system, ensuring proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid examination for substances of abuse. While being a cost-effective approach to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be accepted in legal proceedings. Samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample returns presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the starting specimen and prepped for Extraction. This phase involves retrieving drugs from hair in concentrations far lower than those found in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), resulting in hair drug testing being the most challenging methodology to execute.

For any positive screening outcome, Confirmation is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are washed when necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and meets the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter timeframe.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are notably challenging to falsify, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Chronological data provision: It reflects a history of drug use over a specific period, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Lack of immediate use detection: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is usually more costly than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal deviations in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite being called "hair follicle tests", the process examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Harrisville, UT surpasses traditional urine tests, providing heightened accuracy and reliability. While urine tests detect recent drug use, hair tests unveil a comprehensive drug history. The extended detection window of up to 90 days is invaluable for reducing false negatives. With hair tests, employers can enforce zero-tolerance policies more effectively, minimizing drug-related incidents and enhancing workplace safety.

Comparing hair follicle tests to urine tests reveals several advantages. The former covers a broader detection period, offering a thorough insight into an individual's drug use history. This method's superior accuracy ensures employers make better-informed decisions concerning employee substance use.

Extended Detection Window

In Harrisville, UT, hair follicle testing provides an extended detection window, capturing drug use up to 90 days back. This long-term detection capability gives employers a comprehensive view of an individual's substance history, revealing patterns of drug usage rather than isolated incidents. Businesses seeking to maintain a drug-free environment find these tests particularly beneficial.

Employers in Harrisville gain a significant advantage with hair follicle testing's prolonged detection window. Unlike typical tests, hair analysis captures months of substance history, allowing for more informed decision-making. This thorough assessment leads to stricter compliance to workplace substance policies and fosters a safer and healthier work environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Harrisville, UT stands out due to its tamper-resistant nature. This method reduces risks associated with sample adulteration, ensuring trustworthy results. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
