Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services in Henefer, Utah. When a hair drug or alcohol test is necessary, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities nationwide, including all cities, to conduct such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed for analysis. Hair assessments can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other testing needs.

The use of hair follicle drug testing has significantly risen in recent years. More employers, court systems, and substance abuse specialists are choosing it over conventional urine testing. Hair follicle tests cater to employers with strict drug policies, the judicial system, and probation officers. The key advantage is its longer detection time, up to 90 days, using an observed collection method. However, urine tests remain most accurate for detecting recent use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol use. The fibers of growing hair strands trap biomarkers, offering a long-term history of substance use. Hair samples taken near the scalp can reveal alcohol and drug consumption over an approximate 3-month period. Collecting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

To obtain the ideal 100mg hair specimen for screening and confirmation, a 1.5-inch section of around 200 hair strands (about #2 pencil thickness) closest to the scalp is needed. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We recommend using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. When referring to head hair, we mean scalp hair solely. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary laboratory steps in processing a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where a sample is processed into the laboratory system. This step verifies the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigns a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfills any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a quick initial check for drugs of abuse. As a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage on most samples, any positive screening results require confirmation to be legally valid. Samples testing presumptively positive in Screening require secondary confirmation.

Upon presumptive positivity in Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations than in other methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), accounting for the complexity of hair drug screening.

Positive screening results are verified via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed before necessary confirmation. The entire lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests present a shorter detection span.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It reveals a drug use pattern over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drug presence becomes traceable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-use.
  • Cost: Hair drug testing usually incurs higher costs than other methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth variations influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
