Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Hildale, Utah. For those needing drug or alcohol tests, we specialize in hair testing, with centers nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be used for analysis. Our hair tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for other testing needs.

Recently, the preference for drug testing methods has shifted towards hair follicle testing. Employers, legal entities, and substance abuse professionals often prefer these over urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation officers. A significant advantage is the extended detection period of up to 90 days, observed collection process, and the near impossibility of tampering. However, for drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as a powerful method for detecting alcohol and drug usage. The strands capture biomarkers within the fibers of the hair, providing an extended history of substance use. When hair is cut near the scalp, it can offer a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drug consumption. This method is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches encompassing about 200 strands of hair near the scalp (pencil-width) yields 100mg, which is ideal for both initial screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or more than 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. A jeweler’s scale should be used to measure the sample weight. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable amount of body hair is required. 'Head hair' specifically means scalp hair, whereas 'body hair' refers to any other types such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory process for assessing a drug test comprises four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is entered into the lab's system. This step verifies the sealing and correct shipping of the sample, assigns a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) at random, and finishes any further data recording not covered by an electronic custody system.

Screening serves as an initial quick evaluation for abuse substances. Though cost-efficient for ruling out drug use in most cases, courts require confirmations for positive screenings. Therefore, any samples marked as presumptively positive during Screening need a subsequent confirmation.

Where a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is taken from the initial batch and readied for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations than from other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening notably complex.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed as required before confirmation. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is conducted under the oversight of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection window: Hair tests can recognize drug use for a period extending up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have shorter detection durations.
  • Hard to adulterate: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, enhancing result reliability.
  • Offers usage history: It maps a pattern of substance use over time, not merely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair tests are pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations may impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: While commonly called “hair follicle tests,” the analysis focuses on the hair shaft itself and not the follicle from beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
