Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Huntsville, Utah. For those requiring hair drug or alcohol screening, we specialize in hair analysis and provide testing facilities in cities nationwide capable of performing hair tests. In most cases, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body is sufficient. Hair samples are tested for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has gained prevalence as a method for detecting drug use. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals increasingly opt for hair tests over standard urine tests. Companies with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation individuals use hair follicle drug tests. The primary advantage includes an extended detection period for drug use, usually up to 90 days, with an observed collection process, making it almost impossible to evade. However, urine tests remain more precise for detecting recent drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It captures a lasting record of substances by embedding biomarkers into the hair fibers as they grow. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal substance use for up to three months. Hair is uncomplicated to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands, equivalent to the diameter of a #2 pencil, close to the scalp will yield 100mg, the preferred quantity for testing. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding ten, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other varieties (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory workflow comprises four stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary integration of a sample into the lab's system. This procedure includes confirming that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling out any missing information not captured by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary test for common drugs. Though this step is cost-efficient for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive result must be validated to be accepted in legal proceedings. For samples with a potential positive outcome in Screening, further confirmation is required.

Should a sample test positive in the Screening phase, extra hair is taken from the sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from the hair at a significantly reduced concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), which makes hair testing the most challenging method to execute.

Any positive screening result is confirmed using techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples preliminarily deemed positive undergo a wash before confirmation if necessary. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests reveal drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which capture only recent drug activity.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair test is notably challenging, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Tracks historical usage: It indicates drug usage patterns over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect new use: Detection of drugs in hair takes roughly 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair tests tend to be pricier than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variation: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand itself, rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Huntsville, UT, the advantages of hair follicle testing over urine testing are evident. Hair testing outperforms traditional urine tests by offering superior detection accuracy and reliability. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
