Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Layton, Utah. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair analyses, with centers available in cities throughout the nation capable of conducting such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body hair is necessary. Hair screenings can be utilized for detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized options.

In recent times, drug screening methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle analysis. A growing number of employers, judiciary systems, and substance abuse experts prefer hair testing over conventional urine tests. The hair follicle test is favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, legal entities, and individuals under probation. The major advantage of this testing method is its extensive detection period of drugs, reaching up to 90 days, being visible during collection, and being extremely difficult to falsify. Nonetheless, for detecting drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain the most reliable option.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has evolved into an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a historical record of drug and alcohol use by integrating biomarkers within the growing hair fibers. When collected near the scalp, hair can deliver a detection period reaching up to about three months for alcohol and drug presence. The collection process for hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easy to transport.

Obtaining a 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, perfect for screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen weight of 150mg is advised. We suggest verifying the specimen’s weight using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be sourced, a similar quantity of body hair can be provided. References to head hair pertain exclusively to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test laboratory process involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning begins with incorporating a sample into the lab's system, ensuring the sample is correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional entries not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a swift initial test for drugs. While it does offer a cost-effective preliminary assessment negating drug use in most samples, a positive screen still requires confirmation to hold up in court. Any presumptive positive findings from Screening need further confirmation.

If the Screening step shows a presumptive positive, more hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. This step extracts drugs from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Subsequent Confirmation of positive screening results is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. All samples with presumptive positives are washed before confirmation if needed. The entire lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can trace drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to falsify: It is notably arduous to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Offers historical insights: It displays a pattern of drug usage over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent intake: Drugs require around 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug testing typically incurs higher expenses than alternative drug-testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual variations in hair growth rate may influence the drug metabolites' concentration in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
