Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Liberty, Utah. If a hair-based drug or alcohol examination is required, Accredited Drug Testing is your expert in hair assessments, with facilities in every city Nationwide available to conduct them. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be utilized. These tests are effective for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored hair-testing solutions.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. Many organizations, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle assessments are favored by employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, courts, and those on probation. The primary advantage is its longer detection window of up to 90 days, conducted under observed conditions, making it hard to cheat. Yet, for drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When acquired close to the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of nearly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Gathering hair is straightforward, it's not easily altered, and it can be transported with ease.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, an optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or testing beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is unattainable, a similar amount of body hair may be used. Head hair strictly refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial steps of inputting a sample into a laboratory's framework. This process verifies the correct sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data requirements not captured by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides a preliminary evaluation for drugs of abuse. While it serves as an economical method to rule out drug presence in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for judicial admissibility. Samples that show a presumptive positive during Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

In instances where a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction process. This phase removes drugs from hair at a concentration much lower than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which is why hair testing is the most complex methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Samples that are presumptively positive undergo a washing process before confirmation if necessary. Every step from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited in accordance with the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation under ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can report drug usage for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection period.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are challenging to manipulate, ensuring result accuracy.
  • Historical usage data: They provide insight into a pattern of drug consumption over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally costs more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
