Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Loa, Utah. Whether you're in need of hair drug or alcohol testing, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in hair testing with locations nationwide ready to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. Our hair tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method in drug testing. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests over urine tests. These tests are preferred by entities enforcing zero-tolerance policies, courts, and for those on probation. A key advantage is their extended drug detection capability, lasting up to 90 days, conducted under observation, and difficult to tamper with. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations have gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encases a prolonged record of alcohol and drug usage by storing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When gathered near the scalp, hair can present a detection timeframe of up to around three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels beyond 10, it's advisable to collect 150mg of hair. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be sampled. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test involves four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial handling of a specimen within a lab's framework. It involves confirming that the specimen was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and fulfilling any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary fast inspection for abused drugs. While it's a budget-friendly way to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive Screening must be validated to be legally valid. Any samples that indicate a presumptive positive during Screening necessitate a secondary validation.

If a sample indicates a presumptive positive at the Screening phase, extra hair is retrieved from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair drug testing the most challenging procedure to carry out.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptive positive sample is cleansed before verification, if necessary. The entire laboratory operation from Accessioning to Confirmation falls under the inspection of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a brief detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: It’s exceedingly challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can outline a pattern of drug usage over time, instead of just identifying recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost factor: Hair drug tests are typically pricier compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result fluctuations: Aspects like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Though commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing has shown to be superior to traditional urine tests in several ways in Loa, UT. By providing a much longer detection window, it enables identification of substance use patterns better than urine tests. This thorough approach leads to more informed decision-making for employers who prioritize drug-free environments.

Unlike urine tests, hair analysis cannot be easily manipulated, offering a higher assurance of result accuracy. The extended detection span of hair tests further underscores their reliability, capturing substance use history over weeks rather than days, providing employers with comprehensive insights.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle tests makes them a valuable tool for employers in Loa, UT. Capable of identifying drug use up to 90 days prior, these tests offer a detailed look into an individual's substance habits, ensuring a well-rounded view that short-term tests cannot provide.

Employers benefit from a thorough understanding of an employee's drug use history, thanks to the extended period covered by hair analysis. This method outpaces other testing forms, providing long-term insights that are crucial for maintaining workplace integrity and safety.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle drug testing stands out for its resistance to tampering, a significant advantage for Loa, UT employers. While other methods might be susceptible to manipulation, hair tests offer a level of security and reliability, ensuring results are genuinely reflective of the individual's substance use.

Tests utilizing hair samples represent the gold standard in tamper-resistance, minimizing questions regarding result authenticity. This secure testing process safeguards against adulteration, providing results that employers can trust unequivocally.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
