Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Manderfield, Utah. If you're in need of drug or alcohol testing, we specialize in hair analyses and have centers across all major cities nationwide. Most tests require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customized options.

Recently, the inclusion of hair follicle drug tests in standard drug testing methods has become more common. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are increasingly opting for hair tests over typical urine tests. Hair tests are crucial for employers with zero-tolerance policies, legal proceedings, or probation cases. Their main advantage is a longer detection window of up to 90 days and highly secure collection processes making it hard to tamper with. However, urine tests remain more accurate for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely recognized for effectively identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures enduring evidence of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair. When taken from near the scalp, hair can unveil up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to send.

A sample of 1.5 inches containing roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's width) from near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which serves as the perfect sample for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We advocate weighing the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent volume of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we strictly mean scalp hair only. Body hair pertains to all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processes a drug test result using four main procedures: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning represents the sample's initial processing into the laboratory system. It entails ensuring the sample was properly sealed and delivered, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial rapid evaluation for drugs of abuse presence. While Screening is a cost-efficient method for excluding drug usage in most samples, a positive result must be validated for court admissibility. Samples showing presumptive positives in Screening must undergo further confirmation.

If a sample is found presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques confirm any positive Screening outcomes. Samples indicated as presumptive positives are thoroughly cleansed prior to confirmation as needed. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests detect drug usage up to 90 days compared to urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug tests are notably difficult to tamper with, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Offers historical data: It shows a pattern of drug usage over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally involve higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Often dubbed "hair follicle tests", the evaluation actually analyzes the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
