Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug testing result comprises four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial integration of a sample into the lab's database. This phase checks the sample's seal integrity, correct shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Presumptively positive specimens in Screening necessitate follow-up validation.

For samples returning a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair from the original collection is used for the Extraction process. Drugs are extracted from hair at considerably lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), underscoring the complexity of hair drug screening.

Subsequent to any positive screening outcomes, Confirmation is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technologies. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positives are cleansed as required. The comprehensive procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is subjected to appraisal under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation of ISO / IEC 17025 standards.
