The hair follicle drug test has become an increasingly common method of drug testing in recent times. Employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists are turning to hair testing in place of traditional urine testing. Organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial systems, and probationary bodies often opt for hair follicle tests due to their extended detection period, usually up to 90 days, their reliability during observed collections, and difficulty to tamper with. However, for identifying drug use within a five-day timeframe, the urine test remains the preferred choice.

Hair screening has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive history of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the maturing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair offers up to an approximate 3-month detection period for alcohol and various drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.
A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample for both screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We propose weighing the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a proportional amount of body hair might be acquired. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).
Process Overview
The four major stages in the laboratory analysis of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.
Accessioning covers the initial intake of a sample into a lab’s system. This includes confirming that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.
Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient approach to eliminate drug consumption on the majority of samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be acceptable in court. Any samples that presumptively test positive in Screening require additional confirmation.
In instances where a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. During this step, drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging method to execute.
Verification of any positive screening result is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples testing presumptively positive are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the evaluation itself examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.
Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Milburn, UT
Hair follicle testing provides superior benefits compared to urine tests, especially in terms of detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests, which can only detect recent drug use, hair tests offer a much wider detection window, capturing substance use over months instead of days. This extended period makes hair testing a more comprehensive and reliable choice for employers and other stakeholders.
Employers seeking comprehensive insights into an individual's drug use history will find hair follicle testing a valuable tool. Its ability to detect a broader timeline of usage significantly decreases the chance of drug users slipping through undetected, offering a far superior alternative to standard urine testing.
Extended Detection Window in Milburn, UT
Hair follicle testing offers an impressive detection window that can extend up to 90 days, far longer than traditional drug tests. This capability provides employers with a broader view of an employee or applicant's drug history, revealing substance use patterns over weeks and months, not just days.
Such a long detection period is invaluable for companies in need of comprehensive data regarding an individual's substance use, ensuring informed decisions when hiring or evaluating current employees. This extended window guarantees that even intermittent drug use does not go unnoticed, offering unparalleled scrutiny compared to short-term tests.
Tamper-Resistant Testing Method in Milburn, UT
One of the standout features of hair follicle testing is its resistance to tampering. Unlike other testing methods, hair tests are significantly less prone to adulteration or substitution, providing trustworthy and undeniable results that withstand scrutiny.
This robustness ensures the integrity of the drug testing process, offering stakeholders the confidence that results accurately reflect an individual's substance use history without the risk of manipulation. The reliability of hair testing safeguards against attempts to undermine the testing process, ensuring fair and dependable outcomes.
