In Mills, Utah, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in both drug and alcohol analyses, our centers across the nation, including Mills, are proficient in hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to specific needs.

The adoption of hair follicle drug tests has increased recently, preferred over urine tests by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts. This method fits zero-tolerance policies and probation cases due to its 90-day detection window and observed collection process, making it almost tamper-proof. However, for recent drug use, within five days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has gained recognition as an effective method to detect drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can reveal a prolonged history of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When taken from near the scalp, hair offers a detection window of roughly 3 months for substances like alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively difficult to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A sample of hair measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 strands (around the diameter of a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, it's recommended to have 150mg of the specimen. It's advisable to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. The term head hair pertains only to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result primarily involves these four steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial processing of a sample into a lab’s system. This step involves ensuring the sample’s seal and correct shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial expedited check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-friendly way to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive result needs confirmation to be valid in a legal setting. Any samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening require a subsequent confirmation.

When a sample indicates a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction process. During this phase, drugs are extracted from the hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug testing one of the most challenging methods to carry out.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is regulated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Lengthy detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, compared to the shorter detection times of urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, leading to higher accuracy in results.
  • Offers historical insight: The test can show a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs typically take 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Diverse results: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: The common term "hair follicle tests" is misleading, as the test evaluates the hair strand itself rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Mills, UT boasts several benefits over traditional urine tests. Accuracy in detection is significantly improved with hair testing, as it can identify a broader timeline of drug use. This reliability makes it a preferred choice for employers wanting thorough analysis.

Compared to urine tests, hair tests are more challenging to tamper with and provide a more consistent and reliable overview of substance use, aiding in maintaining workplace integrity.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing in Mills, UT offers substantial benefits, capturing drug use history up to 90 days. This expansive window helps employers in making informed decisions by presenting a fuller picture of an individual's substance use.

Employers gain clearance of an applicant's or employee's long-term substance habits, crucial for maintaining a trustworthy work environment. This comprehensive history is less achievable with shorter detection methods like urine tests.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Mills, UT, is a tamper-resistant method, reducing risks of sample adulteration significantly. Its design inherently prevents common sample-tampering techniques that might affect the reliability of results in other testing types like urine tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
