In Ophir, Utah, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If you're seeking a test for drugs or alcohol through hair analysis, we are experts in this field. Our nationwide centers, including those in every city, can conduct the test. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is typically required, either from the scalp or body, for drug, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized analyses.

The adoption of hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly popular. Employers, courts, and addiction specialists often prefer it over urine tests. It's particularly favored by organizations enforcing strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and probationary programs. The test's key advantage is an extended detection window, usually up to 90 days, ensuring accuracy and reducing the likelihood of tampering. However, urine tests remain optimal for identifying recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair records a prolonged history of alcohol and drug intake by capturing biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers as it grows. Located near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a three-month detection timeline for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, deemed the perfect sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, acquiring 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be obtained. Reference to head hair specifically pertains to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure for handling a drug test in a laboratory encompasses four essential stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary processing of a sample within a laboratory’s arrangements. This step involves ensuring the sample's proper sealing and shipment, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any remaining data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial swift scan for drugs of abuse. While efficient in identifying drug usage in most samples, a positive screening result requires confirmation to hold up in court. Presumptive positive results in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

Upon detecting a presumptive positive result during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Within Extraction, drugs are removed from hair at substantially lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening exceptionally challenging.

Confirmation of a positive screening outcome involves using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation when necessary. The complete laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests offer shorter detection periods.
  • Difficulty in circumventing: Hair drug tests are exceedingly difficult to manipulate, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides usage history: The test reveals patterns of drug use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Drugs typically take 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs compared to other drug testing strategies.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth rates may influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
