Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle screening services in Payson, Utah. Whether you require testing for substances or alcohol, our specialization in hair tests ensures expertise, with facilities available across cities nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body suffices. Hair tests analyze substances, alcohol/ETG, or provide other specialized options.

In recent times, the incorporation of hair follicle drug testing has grown substantially. Numerous employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts now favor hair testing over standard urine analyses. Those implementing zero-tolerance or overseeing probation prefer this method for its extended detection range, covering up to 90 days, secured through a supervised collection method, making tampering nearly impossible. Yet, for recent drug use within a 5-day window, urine testing remains the definitive choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of substance use by holding markers within the fibers of the hair's growth. When collected close to the scalp, hair can offer around a 3-month window for detection of alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of about 200 hair strands (akin to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample size for analysis. For EtG, additional tests or testing over 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. It's recommended to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, a similar quantity of body hair can be utilized. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four major stages involved in lab processing of a drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial integration of a sample into the lab’s system. This ensures the sample was correctly sealed and transported, a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) is assigned, and any additional data not provided via an electronic custody chain is entered.

Screening entails a preliminary swift check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient way to dismiss drug presence for the majority of samples, a positive result must be confirmed for it to be legally valid. Samples that indicate positive in Screening require secondary verification.

If a Screening stage sample is simulatively positive, additional hair is taken from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower intensity than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most complex method to carry out.

Confirmation of any positively screened result is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation where necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests provide a shorter detection scope.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, making outcomes more accurate.
  • Offers historical data: It reflects a drug use pattern over a duration, not merely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs require roughly 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternative drug screening strategies.
  • Result disparities: Factors like hair color and individual discrepancies in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
