In Randlett, Utah, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you require a hair alcohol or drug test, we excel in hair testing and have facilities nationwide to conduct these tests. Typically, you will need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body. Hair tests are conducted for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized hair testing needs.

Lately, the hair follicle drug test has become a preferred method for substance screening. Employers, the judicial system, and Substance Abuse counselors favor hair drug testing over standard urine tests. These tests support zero-tolerance policies and are used by courts and probation services. Their main advantage is the extended detection period, up to 90 days. Although, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged history of alcohol and drug usage since it traps biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to about 3 months for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising approximately 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg is advisable. We recommend weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, an equivalent volume of body hair may be used. It is important to note that when we mention head hair, it refers specifically to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key steps in the lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial incorporation of a sample into the laboratory system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data entry that is not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid check for drug misuse. Although Screening is economical for excluding drug use in most samples, a screen showing a positive result must be verified for it to be valid in legal scenarios. Samples that are presumptively positive during Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

When a sample shows presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and made ready for Extraction. At this point, drugs are extracted from the hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methodologies (ex. urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening is highly intricate to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo a wash prior to confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is conducted under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is notably hard to falsify a hair drug test, thus enhancing the accuracy of the outcomes.
  • Offers past usage data: It provides a usage pattern over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: It requires around 5-7 days for drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Higher Cost: Hair drug tests tend to be more expensive than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Though often termed as “hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand and not the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Randlett, UT, the advantages of hair follicle testing over urine tests are clear. Hair tests provide a broader detection window of up to 90 days, while urine tests offer a shorter timeframe. This advantage ensures a comprehensive evaluation of an individual's drug history. Hair tests are known for their accuracy and reliability, making them a superior option for those who emphasize precise detection and thorough investigations.

While urine tests are more suitable for detecting recent drug use, they lack the long-term insight provided by hair follicle testing. Consistently delivering accurate results, hair tests aid employers and legal entities seeking to enforce zero-tolerance policies, ensuring that individuals comply with specified guidelines regarding substance use.

Extended Detection Window

The prolonged detection window of hair follicle testing in Randlett, UT, offers a clearer view into an individual's substance use. Covering a timeframe of up to 90 days, this method allows employers to assess long-term drug usage accurately. As opposed to urine testing, which only captures recent drug use, hair follicle tests give a more expansive overview, crucial for making informed employment decisions and maintaining workplace safety.

By providing a comprehensive snapshot of an applicant's or employee's drug use history, hair follicle testing is invaluable to organizations. This extended period of detection helps in evaluating potential risks associated with hiring or continued employment, reinforcing company policies and ensuring that job roles are fulfilled by individuals who align with the organization's standards.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle testing in Randlett, UT, significantly reduces the chance of sample manipulation. Unlike urine tests, which can be easily tampered with, hair testing offers an indisputable method of obtaining samples. This robustness ensures the integrity of the results, providing employers and courts with confidence that the screening is both reliable and authentic.

Hair follicle tests utilize a collection process that ensures samples remain untampered and legitimate. By eliminating common adulteration techniques prevalent in other testing methods, this approach guarantees that the findings accurately represent the individual’s substance use, thus upholding the testing process's credibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
