Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Roy, Utah. Whether it's for drugs or alcohol, our expertise lies in hair testing, with centers in every city nationwide ready to conduct these tests. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body hair can be used. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific needs.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become more popular in drug screening. Numerous employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer hair tests to traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are essential for zero-tolerance employers, judicial systems, and probation scenarios. Their key advantage is detecting drug use for up to 90 days, with a monitored collection process that is hard to manipulate. However, urine tests remain most accurate for drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for detecting drugs and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive history of alcohol and drugs by encapsulating biomarkers within the growing strand. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection window of up to about three months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's girth) nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and validation. For EtG additions and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the specimen is suggested. We advocate for using a jeweler's scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair isn't an option, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (like facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the primary stage where a sample is processed within a laboratory's system. This stage involves confirming that the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigning it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry absent an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial, swift evaluation for drug detection. Though Screening is a cost-effective strategy for excluding drug use in most samples, any positive results must be confirmed for legal acceptability. Samples yielding a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate a subsequent validation.

When a sample shows a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction stage. Here, drug compounds are isolated from hair at significantly reduced concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), which is why hair drug analysis is the most intricate methodology.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation via techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positive samples are cleaned prior to confirmation as needed. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is appraised under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and an accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, whereas urine evaluations have a briefer detection period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is exceedingly tough to compromise a hair drug examination, thereby enhancing the precision of results.
  • Offers historical insight: It delivers a trend of drug consumption over time, rather than merely revealing recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent intake: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become noticeable in hair samples.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments are typically pricier compared to alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result disparities: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth variances can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests," the examination targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
