In Rush Valley, Utah, Accredited Drug Testing is the trusted provider of comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Specializing in hair-based drug and alcohol testing, we offer coverage across the nation with centers in every city capable of conducting hair tests. Generally, hair from the crown or body, measuring 1.5 to 2 inches, is required. Our hair tests can identify drugs, ETG/alcohol, or be tailored to specific testing needs.

Utilization of hair follicle drug testing has significantly increased in recent years. It's now often preferred by employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts over traditional urine tests. Employers upholding zero-tolerance policies, court orders, and probationary terms frequently opt for hair testing. The strength of this method lies in its extended detection range of drug use, typically lasting up to 90 days. Unlike other tests, it's conducted under direct supervision and is practically immune to tampering. However, urine testing remains the most precise method for identifying recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a long-term indicator of alcohol and drug use by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can reflect up to a roughly 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the perfect amount for screening and verification. For EtG, extras, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to measure the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair refers to all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step of entering a sample into a lab's system. This step includes ensuring the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing necessary data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial examination for drug abuse. While Screening is a budget-friendly method to eliminate drug use for most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that show presumptive positives during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Upon getting presumptive positives in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a challenging procedure.

Positive screening outcomes undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as needed. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to fake: Manipulating a hair drug test is exceptionally difficult, resulting in more accurate outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Doesn't detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually costlier compared to other drug test types.
  • Result disparities: Variables such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
