Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Salina, Utah. Specializing in hair drug or alcohol tests, we have facilities across all U.S. cities prepared to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. Hair samples can be screened for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored to specific testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a standard approach in drug screening. More employers, legal entities, and substance abuse professionals favor hair tests over urine tests. This method is preferred by employers with strict drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation as it extends detection up to 90 days, ensures strict observation during collection, and is extremely hard to manipulate. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing is increasingly recognized as an efficient method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug intake by capturing biomarkers within its growing fibers. Hair samples taken near the scalp can provide detection capabilities for alcohol and drugs for nearly a three-month period. Collecting hair is straightforward, it is relatively resistant to tampering, and is easily transportable.

An ideal screening and confirmation sample comprises a 1.5-inch segment from approximately 200 hair strands (around the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the head, yielding 100mg of hair. For EtG, additional testing, or panels exceeding 10 items, it is advisable to have 150mg of the sample, preferably weighed using a jeweler’s scale. If no head hair is available, a comparable volume of body hair is acceptable. Regarding head hair, we mean only the scalp hair; body hair pertains to any other types (such as facial or underarm hair).

Process Overview

The main phases in the lab processing of drug test outcomes encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into the lab’s system. This step involves ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) randomly, and completing any leftover data input not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary drug test for substances. While it’s a cost-efficient approach for eliminating drug use in many samples, positive results must undergo confirmation to hold up in legal settings. Samples with a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate further validation.

If a sample shows presumed positivity at Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial batch and readied for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations much lower than other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), underscoring the challenge of hair drug screening.

Confirmation is done on positive screens using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumed positive samples undergo a wash as needed before confirmation. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation per the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use over 90 days, unlike the shorter timespan of urine tests.
  • Challenging to falsify: Cheating a hair test is difficult, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Chronological usage data: It depicts a drug use pattern over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: Drugs only become traceable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other testing types.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair hue and individual growth rates can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though commonly called "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
