Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Sandy City, Utah. Those in need of a hair or alcohol test can leverage our expertise in hair testing, with centers available across the nation for procedure execution. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required for testing. Analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or accommodate other personalized testing needs.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly involved hair follicle analysis. Many organizations, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals opt for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug-free policies, legal entities, and probation departments frequently utilize such tests. Hair testing's main advantage is its extended detection window, which spans up to 90 days, involves witnessed collection, and is difficult to compromise. However, urine tests remain more accurate for detecting recent drug consumption (within five days).

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands capture biomarkers within their fibers as they grow, offering a long-term record of substance use. When taken from near the scalp, hair samples can reflect up to roughly a 3-month period for detecting alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A sample consisting of a 1.5-inch segment from approximately 200 hairs (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for initial tests and confirmations. For EtG evaluations, additional tests, and those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. Owing to head hair, only scalp hair is referred to, whereas body hair encompasses facial, axillary, and other hair types.

Process Overview

The four essential steps in the laboratory analysis of a drug test include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial procedure where a sample is incorporated into a lab’s system. It involves confirming the sample’s proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody setup.

Screening serves as an initial brief assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, legal validity requires that a positive screen must be confirmed. Samples that test tentatively positive in Screening need a subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample show positive results in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair in far lower concentrations than alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug testing.

Verification of any positive Screening results is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo washing as necessary. The whole laboratory protocol from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can uncover drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter time frame.
  • Challenging to deceive: The likelihood of successfully altering hair test outcomes is low, ensuring reliable results.
  • Historical insight: It offers a thorough pattern of substance use history over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Detection of drugs in hair requires about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug exams generally cost more than other forms of drug testing.
  • Result variances: Drug metabolite levels in hair can be influenced by hair color and individual growth differences.

Note: Despite commonly being labeled as "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle tests outshine urine tests by offering superior accuracy and a longer detection window. In Sandy City, UT, they excel in providing reliable data on drug use. Unlike urine tests, which cover a short span, hair follicle testing stretches to 90 days, offering deeper insights.

Many organizations in Sandy City opt for hair testing due to its almost impossible cheat factor, unlike urine tests. It stands as a more accurate indicator, vital for employers implementing strict drug policies to maintain a safe workspace.

Extended Detection Window

The hair follicle testing method in Sandy City, UT, boasts an impressive detection window of up to 90 days. This extended timeline provides employers with a comprehensive view of an individual's substance use history, proving invaluable during hiring or monitoring employees.

Unlike urine tests, which offer a limited detection frame, hair testing covers a broad period, revealing patterns of drug use over months. This comprehensive coverage is essential for ensuring more reliable insights into an applicant's or employee's substance habits.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Employers in Sandy City, UT, favor hair follicle tests due to their resistance to tampering, yielding dependable results. By minimizing risks of adulteration, these tests enhance the credibility of drug testing processes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
